How to soften and wash linen fabric?

Fashion lovers choose linen as the most environmentally friendly material, which stands out for its uniqueness. It’s great that more and more people are able to get their hands on the natural fold of linen, but there’s another aspect that worries some: the myth that linen is a hard, rough material. This is obviously not true, as we have an endless supply of super soft, soft and pleasant to the touch linen fabrics, imported directly from Italy.

Why can linen fabric be stiff?

First of all, the origin of flax fiber must be underlined. Flax is a plant whose thin, erect stem is used for the extraction of fibers. The final consistency of the fiber depends on the way it is processed. They are usually processed using several methods.

One of them is washing with stones. This process uses real stones, such as pumice or volcanic rock, which mechanically contribute to softening the linen fibre.

Another method in the manufacturing process is the use of enzymes of organic origin. This method is a little more popular because it is simpler. The enzymatic treatment softens the thread structure and washes away harsh protein compounds, resulting in a soft, delicate linen fabric that is perfect for any clothing and even bedding.

Our linen fabrics arrive already soft and elastic, as they are specially softened during processing.

The more often you wash your linen, the softer it will be!

Yes, you really didn’t appear! Linen clothes only become more pleasant to wear with time. The more times you wash it, the softer and smoother the fabric will be: this is its nature. Nice, right?

But do it correctly. There are some rules and tips that we would like to introduce to you.

How to treat stains on linen?

Stains from sauce, ice cream or maybe chocolate? Don’t worry, the linen won’t be ruined by a few simple stains.

The special structure of linen, an extremely smooth surface, prevents the absorption of dirt. So, if you find a stain on your linen blouse, all you have to do is soak it in a mixture of water and mild detergent for an hour or two. In this way – while the fabric is soaking – the stain will simply «soften».

It is not necessary and should not be necessary to scrub the resulting stains. Let them «peel off» the fabric on their own by simply soaking them. Amazing, right?

How to wash linen clothes correctly?

Good news for fans of natural fibers: linen can easily be washed in an automatic washing machine. However, some important rules must be kept in mind!

Set the correct water temperature

First of all, you must always pay attention to the internal label of a specific item, where we usually find the washing instructions. However, most colored linen fabrics can be washed in the washing machine at a temperature of 30-40 degrees, and if the linen is white, you can choose a higher water temperature. Also, pay attention to the presence of synthetic fibers in the composition. In this case, choose a lower wash temperature to avoid shrinkage of the fabric.

What is best not to do while washing?

Just don’t use very aggressive chemical detergents. However, linen, no matter how durable, is a natural material, so too strong measures can damage its structure. Also, do not use bleach.

How can we make linen extra soft?

The secret, natural laundry ingredient that will add extra softness to your perfect linen suit or shirt is… vinegar! Yes, vinegar that you can find right in your kitchen.

Do not use fabric softener, it could «stick» to the linen fibers and reduce the precious properties of the linen. To preserve beautiful colors and soften linens, add a little vinegar to the washing machine drum or fabric softener compartment. Don’t worry: the smell will disappear during the rinsing process and you will get wonderfully soft and summery linen items.
