As a sewing enthusiast, I am always looking for the best techniques and equipment to create my creations. Today I will tell you about an essential tool in my laboratory: the serger. What is it, what is it for and how to use it correctly? I’ll explain everything to you!
What is a serger?
An overlock is a specialized sewing machine designed to perform “overlock” type seams. Overlocking is a sewing technique that joins two pieces of fabric together by cutting the edges and wrapping them with chain thread. This ensures a protection against fraying and gives fabric edges a clean, professional finish.
How does an overlock machine work?
Just like a normal sewing machine, the overlocker is equipped with a needle, feed and presser foot. On the other hand, its mechanism is much more complex:
- THE upper knife trim the edges of the fabric as you sew;
- THE lower knife guide the layers of fabric and form a loop with the chain thread;
- THE’Aug passes through the layers of fabric and passes through the loop of thread, thus completing the stitching;
- THE upper looper then wrap the thread around the cut edges of the fabric and forming a hem;
- THE lower looper lock the assembly to secure the wires.
Thanks to this system, the overlocker is able to guarantee quick and precise work, ideal for obtaining impeccable finishes on your creations.
Why use a serger for sewing?
A professional finish
This is undoubtedly the main advantage of the serger: it allows you to create finishes worthy of a professional workshop. The seams are clean, regular and above all very solid. Whether you are a beginner or an expert in sewing, the serger will help you achieve perfect results for your clothes and other textile creations.
Save time
With its multiple functions, the overlock is a true «all in one» sewing machine. Assemble, cut and hem simultaneously, saving you valuable time. So you can focus on creation rather than finishing touches, which are often time-consuming and tedious with a traditional sewing machine.
A versatile tool
In addition to the overlocker, the overlocker also allows you to create other types of seams and finishes, such as:
- THE slide to create reinforcements or insert elastics;
- THE ruffles or aprons add volume to clothes;
- THE rolled edgean elegant and discreet finish.
These options offer a wide variety of creative and technical possibilities for your sewing projects.
How to use a serger?
Choose the right thread
To ensure quality work, it is important to choose the right type of thread. The serger generally works with two to four wires simultaneously. The choice of thread count depends on the type of fabric and the desired result. A strong, durable thread is recommended for thick or high-tension fabrics, while a thinner thread is better suited for delicate, lightweight fabrics.
Prepare the machine
Thread your needles and loopers with your chosen threads, then adjust the tension of each thread according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Also make sure that the knives are positioned and sharpened correctly to obtain a clean cut of the edges of the fabric.
Perform a test on a sample of fabric
Before starting your project, I recommend you carry out a test on a piece of fabric identical to the one you are going to sew. This allows you to check the quality of the sewing and, if necessary, adjust the settings.
Sew with a serger
Hold the fabric firmly under the presser foot and guide it gently while operating the foot pedal. The serger must work quickly and efficiently; it is therefore important do not force or pull the fabric to avoid incorrect machine adjustments or irregular stitching.
Maintain your serger properly
Like any mechanical equipment, the overlocker requires regular maintenance to ensure its correct functioning:
- Dust clean the inside of the machine regularly with a dry brush or vacuum cleaner;
- Check and adjust the thread tension according to the manufacturer’s instructions;
- Clean and sharpen the knives to ensure a clean cut of the fabric edges;
- Lubricate the machine mechanisms withspecific oil for overlockers.
Now that you know all the secrets of the serger and its advantages, all you have to do is integrate this versatile tool into your workshop to obtain impeccable finishes on your textile creations. Happy sewing!
